Legislation of interest:
SB2820 (Sen. Haile) - HB2992 (Rep. Cameron Sexton) is a caption bill and if you read the caption it looks like a bill about allergies. Here is the caption. Education - As introduced, authorizes the department of education to make its standardized form for reporting student allergies available to all local education agencies on its website. - Amends TCA Title 49. Sen. Lunberg (Chair of the Senate Education Committee) is the sponsor of the amendment that makes the bill. Well if you look at the amendment (which I did) you see this bill is not at all about allergies. This legislation would create Charter Boarding Schools for “at risk” children. REALLY? This smells of what Arne Duncan (US Dept. of Ed under Obama) said years ago that he felt one day we may need to have these children 24/7. So they hide this bill under a caption bill so no one knows what is going on. When you read the description of what children will be entered into this program it sounds like a juvenile detention center covered up as a school. Can you imagine the problems this will start. Creating schools filled with troubled/angry/violent 6th-12th grade students?? Sorry but call this what it is……these are juvenile detention centers. Perhaps they should address these children long before 6-12th grade instead of pushing them through the system so the district has faked positive metrics only to find out by 6th grade these kids are lost to the system. So a child that is one year behind will be offered this option so they can go to school with juvenile delinquents which are generally juvenile criminals? Gee, what could possibly go wrong?? Why couldn’t they just offer this service to students who are currently in detention centers at the detention centers? Of course this bill passed the Senate Education Committee (9-0). One question was asked: Can a student from Bristol, VA or Georgia attend these schools? The answer was: If students from other states are allowed to attend TN schools this bill would allow them to attend these Charter schools. But no one actually said if TN allows children from other states to attend TN schools. There was no fiscal note on this bill. Not sure how there would no additional cost for this program. That was not discussed before they voted for the bill. Attending these schools is voluntary (for now).
Thank you, Karen Bracken
I’m just curious… do you guys have someone involved in every TN county?
Thank you Karen!
